The Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellowship is a nationally recognized, year-long leadership program that honors student changemakers committed to civic engagement, public problem-solving, and addressing the root causes of social challenges.
As a proud member institution of Campus Compact, University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) may nominate one outstanding currently enrolled student for national consideration each year.
What’s in It for You?
The selected UMGC Newman Civic Fellow will receive:
- National recognition as a student civic leader
- Regular virtual professional development events focused on leadership and public problem-solving skills
- An annual in-person Convening of Fellows (October 2026)
- One-on-one leadership development and mentorship throughout the fellowship year

Student Expectations & Commitment
The Newman Civic Fellowship runs from September 2026 through the 2026–2027 academic year. Selected students are expected to:
- Participate in a required virtual orientation (September 2026)
- Attend the annual in-person Convening of Fellows (October 2026)
- Engage in regular virtual programming and professional development events
- Attend monthly check-in meetings with their assigned mentor
- Actively develop or advance a civic or social impact project aligned with their interests and availability
The time commitment is manageable and designed to complement your academic and professional responsibilities while meaningfully investing in your leadership growth.
